Although quite a lot has been said about affirmations, I have noticed that most people still use them not only incorrectly but even in a way that harms them! Are you one of those? An affirmation is a statement or confirmation of something (belief) that we say to ourselves or to other people. There are positive and negative affirmations. We use both types unknowingly every day. A positive affirmation is, for example, when you say “I can do it” and a negative one is “I am so stupid!”.

You have probably realised by now that we spontaneously use mainly negative affirmations such as “I am dumb, I am so clumsy, I failed again” which do not support us and are not beneficial. And that is why all these positive, conscious affirmations we believe in and repeat on a conscious level are so trendy now.

It is here where the problem lies! If I have for decades believed deep inside that I am not worthy, I am actually damaging myself with the affirmation "I am worthy". Why? Because I am not only lying to myself, I am even insulting my own intelligence! I tell myself something that is not true and I think I can fool myself. This isn’t working because we are rational beings and our mind immediately pops up saying: “What are you lying to yourself about again?”. And the mind is right!

It is even worse than that. When I repeat a positive affirmation, which deep inside me I perceive as not true, I feel even worse! Why? I feel anxious and angry because by saying the affirmation “I am worthy” I can see even more clearly those areas where I am still NOT worthy. The chasm between where I stand and where I would like to be becomes even more evident and I realise I am light years away from feeling worthy, and that only deepens my sadness or the feeling of being some distance from the goal. A terrible feeling...

So what can we do then? How can we use positive affirmations correctly so they don’t harm us? It’s good you asked because I will tell you a secret: a really positive affirmation is one you believe in already NOW. Does this sound weird (in the sense of “so, what’s the catch”)? Perhaps, but only such an affirmation will help you. Why? Because when you believe it, your heart starts vibrating this beautiful and pleasant frequency, and when you repeat the affirmation you reinforce it, strengthen it, you live it and attract more of this beauty into your life. So you have to find what is already beautiful, reinforce it and, in a way, ‘harness’ its vibration, so that it may bring you even more of the same.

Here’s an example: because I feel unworthy, I want to believe I am worthy. So I have to find an affirmation from that same sphere of ‘worthiness’ which I believe in already now. For example, “I deserve respect" or “I do my work well”. I must repeat that I have to believe this affirmation already NOW. If the affirmation “I deserve respect” is not yet my truth, I CERTAINLY must not use it!

Do an exercise for yourself: what would you like to believe about yourself? I am worthy, I am good enough, I deserve love, I am safe etc. Then derive an affirmation from this statement which is true for you already now. How will you know this? When your heart swells with joy at the affirmation, it means you are on the right path. :) Then say the affirmation several times a day and your heart will sing with joy every day and attract more of the same into your life.
